Precarious flight: models of dependency

This short series of paintings takes as its starting point a collection of found photographs depicting small model airplanes. These improvised planes, assembled from everyday materials like polystyrene plates, cardboard, and sellotape, and roughly decorated with felt-tip pens, are at once playful and precarious.

Here, the models themselves become a subtle metaphor: fragile and dependent, these planes lack any means of propulsion and can only take flight through the actions of others. Their vulnerability speaks to broader themes of dependency and the often-overlooked need for support that shapes contemporary life. In a world that prizes self-reliance and personal responsibility, these makeshift airplanes stand as gentle reminders of our interdependence, and the quiet strength that can be found in acknowledging it.
